Deadly Mpox Variant Spreading Rapidly — WHO Sounds Global Alarm

A Fast-Spreading Threat
The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an urgent warning as the mpox (monkeypox) virus rapidly spreads across multiple continents. Recent cases of the new clade 1b variant have been confirmed in Italy, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United States — all among people with no recent travel history, suggesting community transmission.
Global Spread Beyond Africa
According to WHO’s latest report, the virus continues to circulate through all its subtypes. The organization cautioned that unless the outbreak is contained swiftly, global transmission will likely persist. The clade 1b variant, initially detected in Central Africa, is now spreading beyond the continent.
By September 2025, 3,135 confirmed mpox cases and 12 deaths were reported across 42 countries. Over 80% of these cases occurred in Africa, with 2,862 infections and 17 deaths recorded in 17 African nations during the past six weeks alone.
Understanding the Virus
Mpox has two main genetic lineages: Clade I and Clade II. Clade I, typically found in Central and East Africa, is known to cause more severe disease. Clade II, originating in West Africa, was responsible for the milder global outbreak in 2022.
However, the new clade 1b variant appears to be more aggressive. It has been observed primarily in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries. Central African nations are currently reporting both clade 1a and 1b infections, while East African regions are dominated by the 1b variant.
Urgent Global Response Needed
WHO officials emphasize the need for immediate action to contain the spread. Rapid detection, isolation, and vaccination campaigns will be crucial to prevent a wider global health crisis.
