EARTHQUAKE PROTESTS HATAY

Highlighting the expected Istanbul earthquake, Earth scientist Prof. Görür stated, “Move industry from Marmara to Anatolia.” Görür spoke at the ‘Anttalks’ event organized by Antalya Metropolitan Municipality at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM).

Emphasizing that ignoring the earthquake risk in Turkey is not possible, Görür said the following:

There are four tectonic plates within the geography of Turkey. As a result of the movements of these plates, significant faults have developed along their boundaries. These faults have been generating earthquakes in Turkey for 13 million years. They will continue to generate earthquakes for millions of years to come. Therefore, Turkey can never get rid of earthquakes. Earthquakes will not end, they will not stop. Therefore, Turkey needs to have earthquake-resistant settlement areas.

ANTALYA NOT STABLE

The ground on which much of Antalya sits is not stable. Especially in the eastern parts of Antalya, alluviums are quite common. Because numerous rivers from the high mountainous areas to the north come into the gulf. These rivers deposit significant amounts of alluviums into the gulf. Therefore, the land part of the gulf, where Antalya sits, consists of these fillings.

MORE SKYCRAPERS MORE DANGER

The more skyscrapers you build in Antalya, the more you increase the danger. In other words, our gulf is surrounded by active faults from the east, west, and north. All earthquakes that occur in these fault zones significantly affect Antalya. In addition, in the south of the city, there is the Cyprus-Hellenic arc, which we call the subduction zone, within the Mediterranean. This danger can come from the sea. In other words, three major tectonic lines threaten Antalya.

Industry should be moved to Anatolia

Görür stated that in the expected Istanbul earthquake, the industry in the Marmara Region would be significantly affected, and it is necessary to move it to Anatolia by providing the necessary infrastructure.
