Economy in Turkey: Price of a bagel (simit) in Ankara goes up to 10 liras

After the election, many products are getting a raise on top of a raise. The President of the Simitçiler Chamber, announced the increase in simit prices, yesterday. The price of a bagel in Ankara was 7 liras until yesterday.

He explained the reason for the increase as follows.

“Citizens of Ankara, unfortunately, we are here with the news of a raise again. In January prices were increased to 7 TL, in Ankara. Now, bagel (simit) prices will be 10 TL on August 1.

The purchasing situation of money is getting worse and worse. We have to do cost calculations every day. Today, a liter of diesel costs 37 TL. We are buying the diesel we bought for 17 liras last year for 37 liras this year. Sesame prices have been increased by 300 percent. Flour prices have risen by 300 percent. There’s no need to even talk about rents. This profession has become impossible. We apologize to all of you as Ankara citizens; because it is not us who is doing this, we are just updating the price.”
