According to the surprising results obtained in the elections, nearly 74% of the Turkish population will be governed by opposition party municipalities at the local level. Interesting results emerged in the provinces won in the local elections. The weight of provinces to be governed by the CHP, such as Bursa, which is heavily industrialized, is striking among indicators such as gross domestic product (GDP), population, and exports. A significant portion of the Turkish economy is located in provinces where mayors from the CHP are present.

In addition to significant losses in votes for the ruling Cumhur Alliance in the local elections on March 31, the increase in votes for the opposition has also been reflected in the proportions of population managed locally. According to the election results, 73.59% of this population will be governed by opposition parties locally. Accordingly, the number of people living in the 35 municipalities won by the CHP is 52 million 900 thousand 730, and their proportion to the total population is 61.96%.

In contrast, the total population in the provinces to be governed by the largest party within the People’s Alliance, the AK Party, is calculated as 19 million 243 thousand 314, and their share of the total population is 22.54%. 2 million 304 thousand 334 people live in municipalities won by the MHP, and their share of the total population is measured at 2.70%. GDP PER CAPITA IN CHP MUNICIPALITIES IS $9,588

Changes in GDP per capita were also calculated for municipalities managed by political parties according to 2019 and 2022 data. Accordingly, while GDP per capita in provinces governed by the CHP was $9,120 in 2019, this level was determined as $9,588 in the 2024 elections. GDP per capita in AK Party municipalities was $6,258, while it was calculated as $7,294 in this election.

THE CONTRIBUTION OF OPPOSITION-WON PROVINCES TO GDP IS 77.7 %

While the contribution of provinces governed by opposition parties to GDP was 66.05% in the 2019 elections, it increased to 77.7% in the provinces won in the 2024 elections. In this context, the contribution of CHP municipalities increased from 62.52% to 73.41%. While the contribution of provinces governed by the AK Party to GDP decreased from 30.77% to 19.44%, the contribution of provinces governed by the MHP decreased from 3.99% to 2.12%.

80% OF EXPORTS TO BE MADE FROM CHP PROVINCES

Looking at the export data, a larger proportion is encountered. The share of provinces won by the CHP in total exports is almost 80% with 79.57%.
