Elections Concluded in the UK: Labour Party comes to power for the first time in 14 years

In the elections held yesterday in the UK, the Labour Party came to power for the first time in 14 years. Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is expected to resign after apologizing for the historic defeat.

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, who defeated Sunak’s party and ended the Conservative Party’s turbulent 14-year period, will become the new Prime Minister of the country.

According to the exit poll announced by the research company Ipsos UK after the polls closed, the Labour Party won 410 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons, securing its victory. The ruling Conservative Party, which previously held 365 seats, saw its number of seats drop to 131.

According to a report by Sözcü, the far-right Reform UK Party won 13 seats, the Liberal Democrats won 61 seats, the Scottish National Party won 10 seats, and the Green Party won 2 seats. Nigel Farage, the leader of the Eurosceptic Reform UK party, was elected as an MP for the first time.

The Conservatives experienced the biggest defeat in their party’s history, as voters punished them for the cost of living crisis, failing public services, and a series of scandals. Many ministers from the last Conservative cabinet failed to secure their seats.

In his victory speech, Labour Party leader Starmer said, “Tonight, people here and across the country have spoken, ready to end the politics of performance, embrace change, and return to public service politics.”

Starmer continued, “Change starts right here… You voted. Now it’s time for us to deliver on our duties.”

Accepting his defeat and congratulating Starmer, Sunak said, “Power will be transferred peacefully, with the goodwill of all parties. There is much to learn and reflect upon, and I take responsibility for the loss of many good and hardworking Conservative candidates. I am sorry.”
