Elon Musk and a group of technologists have demanded a break to the development of artificial intelligence systems such as ChatGPT. Elon Musk and a group of artificial intelligence experts and technology industry executives signed an open letter together, emphasizing the risks of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to society and humanity, and called for a six-month break from developing a more powerful system than OpenAI’s newly launched artificial intelligence chatbot GPT-4.

An open letter published by the non-profit Future of Life Institute and signed by more than 1,000 people, including Musk, demanded a break to the development of advanced artificial intelligence robots until common safety protocols are developed for such artificial intelligence robot designs and implemented and audited by independent experts.

“Powerful artificial intelligence systems should be developed only when we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks manageable,” the letter said. The letter detailed the risks of artificial intelligence systems competing with humans to society and civilization in terms of economic and political disruptions, and called for artificial intelligence developers to work with politicians and regulatory agencies for supervision.
