Erdoğan speaks to Greek media: “Our visit to US has postponed due to schedules of both parties not aligning”

Ahead of hosting Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis on Monday, President Erdoğan spoke to the Greek media. With a critical development looming on the Ankara-Athens axis where relations have been mixed recently, notable statements came from Erdoğan.

President Erdoğan, who was preparing to host Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Ankara on Monday, spoke to the Greek media. Speaking to Kathimerini, one of Greece’s widely read newspapers, Erdoğan discussed the relations between the two countries.

Addressing the upcoming pivotal meeting between the two countries, Erdoğan said that cooperation and the refugee issue would be on the table. Erdoğan also touched upon some other issues regarding the relations between Turkey and Greece.

POSTPONED US VISIT

Regarding the postponed US visit planned for the past weeks, Erdoğan said, “Our visit to the US has been postponed due to the schedules of both parties not aligning. As you know, it’s close to the US elections, and Biden’s schedule has become even busier. Our schedules are hectic both domestically and internationally. Such visits depend on the convenience of both sides. Our colleagues are continuing their meetings with counterparts, and efforts are underway to determine a suitable date.”

ISSUES REGARDING RELATIONS BETWEEN TURKEY AND GREECE

Erdoğan also noted following: “We are in favor of maintaining the political balance of the US in Turkish-Greek relations. We believe that approaches that maintain a distance befitting of alliance law and encourage constructive dialogue will be beneficial. Additionally, we have direct, intermediary-free contact with Greece. Maintaining and enhancing this will contribute more positively to our relations.”
