President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said use of excessive force was inadmissible, calling on parties in Ukraine to respect civil rights and freedoms.

The president who was in the capital Rome of Italy to hold official talks held a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta in the aftermath of their meeting at prime ministry’s palace in Chigi.

Noting they discussed recent changes in Ukraine during their meeting, Rompuy said European Union (EU) called on the parties to be respectful to civil rights and freedoms, adding excessive force was inadmissible.

The president also said Italy, which endeavors to come out of economic crisis, should continue its efforts to get out of budget deficit with a renewed political stability in order to turn into sustainable growth.

Rompuy warned that Euro crisis was still behind them, adding EU countries should sustain economic reforms, support economic growth and present employment opportunities.

Rompuy also said the EU summit which will be held in June, 2014 would focus on migration and immigrant policies.

In addition, Italian Prime Minister Letta said Italy was on the right route to hold true calculations and the country’s focus was on term presidency of EU in the second half of 2014.

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, meanwhile, received Rompuy at the presidential palace in Quirinale before the meeting with Italian prime minister.
