Travel during covid19

European Union (EU) leaders have asked their citizens not to travel unless necessary because of the Coronavirus outbreak, while warning that new restrictions could come into force in the coming days.

EU leaders discussed new measures that could be taken because of the pandemic during their nearly four-hour summit meeting on January 21st.

Following the summit, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement, “We need to strongly discourage travel, both within countries themselves and to other countries for reasons that are not necessary.”

European Council President Charles Michel also noted that additional restrictive measures might be needed to restrict non-mandatory travel, and assessments on this issue were ongoing. European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen and Michel said co-ordination work on additional measures would continue “in the coming days.”
