USB-C CHARGE

The European Union (EU) has set the date on which the use of USB-C charging input will be mandatory for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and cameras, as December 28, 2024.

The EU’s regulation, which aims to reduce electronic waste and will standardize different charging inputs such as USB-C, Micro USB and Lightning for various electronic devices, has been published in the Official Journal of the EU.

Thus, the effective date of the obligation for phone manufacturers to use a USB-C charging cable will be December 28, 2024.

Starting from this date, the new standard charging input for portable electronic devices will be USB-C. For all new devices such as smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, portable video game consoles, speakers, keyboards, USB-C charging input will be mandatory.

THE REGULATION WILL AFFECT APPLE IN PARTICULAR

Starting from this date, Apple’s new devices will also need to include a USB-C input.

The EU had previously announced that the deadline for this implementation was the autumn of 2024. With the completion of the legal process, the date of introduction of uniform charging entry into practice became clear.

Currently, most Android devices are charged via USB-C input. Headphones and various other accessories, as well as new laptops, use the same input.

The regulation is expected to particularly affect the Apple company, which uses different charging inputs. Apple uses a different input called lightning on its smartphones, some tablets and headphones. The company prefers USB-C input in its new iPads and laptops.
