Factories established by Atatürk, the founder of Turkey, in first 15 years of Republic

Thanks to factories founded by Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in first 15 years of the republic, heavy industrial production increased by 152 percent between 1929-1938 while total industrial production increased by 80 percent.

Accordingly increases such as 100 percent in coal production, 600 percent in Chromium, 200 percent in other mines were witnessed while iron production increased from 0 to 180 thousand tons, sugar production increased 200 times. Sugar production, which started in 1926, increased from 5 thousand 162 tons to 95 thousand 192 tons between 1927 and 1930. The textile industry started to produce 80 percent of the country’s textile needs. Imports of textile products in 1927 were 51,000,000 Turkish liras and this figure fell to 11,900,000 Turkish lira in 1939. Between 1924 and 1929, the production of cotton products increased from 70 tons to 3,773 tons, wool from 400 tons to 763 tons, silk from 2 tons to 31 tons.

Below factories were built and put into operation in the first 15 years during which Turkey succeeded to realize one of the greatest development performances ever in history. To be even much more important, this great success was accomplished right after the war of independence which Turkey fought with very limited resources and declared its liberty as a brand new republic all tired and worn out. The young republic under the direction of Atatürk had the motivation and enthusiasm though, which changed everything – for the better obviously.

Today however we can see that many of these production facilities – very valuable assets of Turkey – have been privatized and sold by AK Party government (and some by previous governments). Many ask the question “Where has all the revenue cashed from this process gone?”. Many answer; “Buried into cement” – roads, bridges, cit hospitals etc.
