The number of deaths from counterfeit alcohol rises to 17

Ahead of New Year’s, the death toll from consuming fake alcohol in Istanbul has increased to 17. A total of 22 people are still undergoing treatment in hospitals.

The Istanbul Police Department’s Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Unit, along with local police teams, continues its operation against counterfeit alcohol.

7 Discharged: A total of 46 people sought medical help across the districts of Şişli, Beyoğlu, Fatih, Kağıthane, Esenyurt, Ümraniye, Üsküdar, and Bakırköy. Of those who went to the hospital, 17 died, 22 are still being treated, and 7 people have been discharged.

8 Arrested: An operation was carried out against suspects identified as selling counterfeit alcohol. A total of 19 suspects were detained. After processing, 8 of them were arrested and sent to prison. The police investigation is ongoing.
