Reviewing the incentive system for Turkey’s poor regions, Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek said the government would try to implement “more unique models.”

Şimşek was in the southeastern province of Batman, as part of his electoral campaign as a parliamentary deputy candidate for the Justice and Development Party, or AKP.

“We want to bring textile companies to provinces in this region, to Diyarbakır, Batman and Siirt,” Şimşek said. “While reviewing the government’s incentive system, we will develop unique models special to this region. We will pave the way for those who invest here.”

Noting that the government will establish a “textile campus” on 24.7 acres owned by the Treasury, Şimşek said a total of 18 different facilities are to be built there. “We will also develop the infrastructure of the campus. All kinds of support will be provided to facilities,” he said.

Şimşek also said he would visit Istanbul’s Merter district, which is known as a textile hub, to attract the attention of textile companies to the Southeast. “This region is close to the Middle East. Not only textiles, but we have the chance to sell other products to the region too,” he said.
