Fire at prison known for political arrests, in Iran

It was stated that a fire had broken out at Evin Prison, known for political arrests in the Iranian capital Tehran, and gunshots had bee heard from the compound. Images shared on social media showed gunshots and an alarm being heard from the prison in the evening, and smoke rising.

Iran’s official agency IRNA wrote that a fire broke out in some wards due to detainees setting their clothes on fire. The agency added that there had been a fight between the prisoners and the guards, while claiming that control had been maintained in the prison.

A witness contacted by Reuters said: “The families of the detainees gathered in front of the main gate of Evin Prison. I see fire and smoke. A lot of special forces. Ambulances are also here.”

According to the images posted by Iranian journalist Messih Alinejad on Twitter, people got on the way to the prison after reports of a fire and explosion. Alinejad wrote that ’the life of the prisoners was in danger’.
