According to a joint study by the Germany-based Max Planck Institute and the Cyprus Institute, one of the world’s leading research institutions, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East will soon be shaken by unprecedented extreme weather events.

In a study published in the scientific journal Reviews of Geophysics, it was stated that if the necessary measures were not taken immediately, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East would come under the influence of a very serious climate crisis. The report described the region as the “center of climate change” and emphasized that the rate of temperature increase in the region was almost twice the global average.

It is predicted that by the end of this century, temperatures in the region will rise by up to 5 degrees, unprecedented scorching heat will be experienced, especially in the summer. According to the report, with the decrease in the amount of precipitation, the region will experience a very serious water and food crisis, all economic sectors will be affected by the crisis, 400 million people living in the region will face very devastating effects. With the rise of water levels, coastal regions and agricultural areas will be on the verge of extinction in many places.

In addition to Turkey, Greece, Qatar, Syria and Saudi Arabia were among the countries to be decimated by the climate crisis, the report said.
