The Earthquake That Redefined the Town
The most dramatic turning point came on April 25, 1957. A powerful earthquake, close to magnitude 7, struck Fethiye and its surroundings. The town, then known as Makri, was almost entirely destroyed. Hundreds of lives were lost, and thousands of residents were left without shelter. Those who witnessed it describe an unsettling stillness afterward — a once-busy town reduced to silence.
This disaster became a clear dividing line in Fethiye’s history. Nothing would look the same again.
Rebuilding, Not Replacing
What followed was not merely reconstruction, but transformation. Fethiye was rebuilt almost from scratch. New neighborhoods were planned, streets widened, and development spread across more open ground. Modern urban planning replaced the dense historical layout, which is why the town today feels more spacious and contemporary than many other historic places in Turkey.
Later earthquakes, smaller in scale, reinforced a shared understanding among locals: seismic risk is part of life here. Rather than ignoring it, the town learned to adapt. Awareness, preparedness, and flexibility became quiet but essential traits of the community.
