Gaza conflict: Israeli government agrees to a ceasefire and a prisoner swap

The Israeli government announced that a 4-day ceasefire and prisoner swap agreement with Hamas had been agreed. Hamas announced that 150 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons would be released in exchange for 50 hostages.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office announced in a statement that the Tel Aviv government had approved the first stage of the goal of freeing all Israeli prisoners in Gaza. The statement said, “Accordingly, it is envisaged that at least 50 hostages consisting of women and children will be released for 4 days and clashes will be interrupted during this time. Release of every 10 hostages will allow for an additional 1 day break from the clashes.”

“The Israeli government, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the security forces will continue the battle to ensure that all the hostages return home, the liquidation of Hamas is completed and there is no new threat to Israel,” the statement also said.

In a statement, Hamas said that under the agreement, 50 Israeli hostages would be released in exchange for 150 Palestinian women and children in Israeli prisons. The agreement also stated that hundreds of trucks carrying fuel, humanitarian and medical aid would be allowed to enter the Gaza Strip. It was emphasized that Israel had committed not to attack anyone or arrest anyone in the entire Gaza Strip during the ceasefire period.
