BRA FOR CANCER DETECTION

Canan Dağdeviren, the Turkish scientist who invented the “electronic bra” for early detection of breast cancer, has been listed among the world’s inspiring 100 women for the year 2023, according to the British public broadcaster BBC.

Continuing her work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, Canan Dağdeviren recently developed a wearable “electronic bra” for the early detection of breast cancer using ultrasound.

Dağdeviren drew inspiration for the invention of the “electronic bra” from her aunt, who was diagnosed with advanced-stage breast cancer at the age of 49 and passed away six months later, despite regular cancer screenings.

In its statement about Dağdeviren, the BBC, in a list that includes human rights advocate Amal Clooney and former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama, said, “Dağdeviren, at her aunt’s bedside, sketched the rough design of a diagnostic device that could be placed inside a bra, enabling more frequent screening for individuals at high risk of breast cancer. This technology has the potential to save millions of lives.”

After the announcement of the list, Dağdeviren shared her joy on the social media platform X, stating, “I am very happy to be selected for the list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world, organized by BBC for the 11th time, and to represent the Republic of Turkey on this list in the 100th year of the Republic. I am delighted to say ‘We are here.’ I express my inventions of medical devices created for women on a global scale.”
