Geoscientist Professor and earthquake expert warns: “I’m saying this for first time, let whole Turkey hear it”

Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci GORUR has said, “I’m saying this for the first time, let the whole of Turkey hear this, there are two faults that produce the most earthquakes in Turkey. One is the North Anatolian fault, the other is the East Anatolian fault. Both faults have drained a large part of their energy.” Stating that the damage would be more in Istanbul, Prof. GORUR said, “The situation in Istanbul is not good at all. All scientific research shows that the time is coming in Istanbul.”

 “WE ARE WAITING FOR 7.5 IN ISTANBUL”

Stating that the damage would be more in Istanbul, Prof. GORUR said, “The situation in Istanbul is not good at all. Just as I wrote that we were worried about Maraş, 3 days ago, I am worried about Istanbul in the same way. All scientific research shows that the time is coming in Istanbul. It was said that an earthquake was expected in about 30 years. I mean, it has come very close, as 23 years have passed, since last one. However, the Maraş earthquake is bigger than the Marmara earthquake we expect. We expect a maximum of 7.5 in Istanbul. Although we expect a smaller earthquake in Istanbul, the damage in Istanbul will be more than in Maraş. On the other hand, I regretfully predict that the eventual damage will be quite high in Maraş. I hope I’m wrong, but we’ll see when it’s officially announced.”

“MINISTRY OF DISASTER SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED”

Stating that the Ministry of Disaster should be established, Prof. Dr. Naci GORUR continued his words as follows:

“First, a Disaster Ministry should be established. After the establishment of this ministry, it should have a good budget, the necessary infrastructure and coordination should be carried out. With 5-year plans, all cities on earthquake belts should be transformed into earthquake resistant cities. A microzoning study should be carried out first. Risk analysis should be carried out and then harm reduction studies should be conducted.”
