Government finds way to reduce budget deficit by imposing hefty fines

The government has found a way to reduce the budget deficit by imposing hefty fines. In just two months, a total of 774.4 billion TL in fines were issued, reaching 91% of last year’s total amount within this short period.

The astronomical figures regarding financial penalties were highlighted in the budget data released by the Ministry of Treasury and Finance.

In the first two months of 2025, fines amounted to a record-breaking 774.4 billion TL, marking a 51% increase compared to the same period last year.

This figure represents 91.1% of the total fines imposed in 2024, which amounted to 849.9 billion TL.

TRAFFIC FINES DOUBLE

During this period, judicial fines rose by 5.5%, increasing from 72.1 billion TL to 76.1 billion TL, while administrative fines surged by 215%, jumping from 62.5 billion TL to 196.7 billion TL.

The amount of traffic fines also doubled in the first two months of the year. Traffic fines for this period increased by 106%, rising from 19.4 billion TL to 40 billion TL. Of this amount, 9.9 billion TL was collected in the first two months. Last year, a total of 43.6 billion TL in traffic fines were collected.

461 BILLION TL IN TAX FINES

Tax fines also saw a 28.6% increase, rising from 358.6 billion TL to 461.1 billion TL.

In total, 774.4 billion TL in fines were imposed, but only 35.4 billion TL was collected in the first two months. The budget target for fines at the beginning of the year was set at 245.4 billion TL.

In 2024, a total of 849.9 billion TL in fines were imposed, with 155.5 billion TL collected, despite a collection rate of just 18.3%. However, the initial target of 100.8 billion TL was exceeded.
