It is reported that the Greek parliament has ratified the exclusive economic zone agreement signed with Egypt on the Eastern Mediterranean. The Treaty on the exclusive economic zone between Greece and Egypt, which raised tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, received approval from the Greek parliament.

According to the agreement signed with Egypt against the exclusive economic zone agreement signed by Libya and Turkey and not recognized by Greece, the areas of Turkey, TRNC and Libya in the sea are left to Egypt and Greece.

However, a statement from the Foreign Ministry said that the agreement signed was null for Turkey. The ministry said in a statement that Egypt had purposely given up on its own maritime jurisdiction.  It also noted that Egypt, which gave up 11,500 square kilometers with the agreement it signed with the Greek Cypriot Administration in 2003, was also losing its maritime jurisdiction with the so-called agreement it signed with Greece.

The same statement said following as well: “Libya’s rights are also being usurped by this agreement. There is no doubt that Turkey will not allow any activity in this area and will continue to resolutely defend the legitimate rights and interests of our country and the Turkish Cypriots in the Eastern Mediterranean.”
