Hidden hike in electricity prices every month! Bills will increase even if consumption remains constant
Economist Prof. Dr. Şenol Babuşcu took to social media to announce that a hidden hike was made in electricity prices. Babuşcu stated, “A bill that was previously 200 TL will double to 500 TL.” Following Babuşcu’s statements, the EMO shared details of the application set to come into effect on January 1, 2025, stating, “Even if consumption remains the same, the bill will reach high, fluctuating values each month.”
After a recent hidden hike in electricity prices, the Chamber of Electrical Engineers (EMO) announced, “Even if consumption remains the same, bills will reach high values that change every month.”
“Reflection of Market Conditions Is Unacceptable”
The EMO Board of Directors, in a press release regarding the “Last Resort Supply Tariff Communiqué,” noted that consumers covered by this regulation are forced into tariffs directly reflecting free market costs. They emphasized that it would be “unacceptable” to impose market conditions on individuals, especially those who cannot take measures against rising costs or pass on these costs to others if applied in residential settings.
“Bills Will Continue to Rise”
The EMO, basing their calculations on the assumption that a family of four would consume 230 kWh per month as a minimum living standard, pointed out that this value has been accepted by the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) as 240 kWh for calculation purposes, equating to a daily usage of 8 kWh for the lower tier. The 417 kWh figure, they explained, will become a new tier.
Households consuming above an average of 417 kWh per month will receive bills similar to those for high-consumption industrial enterprises. If the application is implemented in its current form, households in this category will see monthly bills rise to high, variable values tied to the spot market, even if their consumption remains unchanged.
They Will Take It to Court for Cancellation
In addition, EMO announced that it would take legal action for the cancellation of this regulation and called on everyone affected by the change to protect their consumer rights.
