Renewable energy investment from Tatmetal, one of Turkey’s largest “Steel Industry” companies
Strengthening its vision to add value to industry and the environment, Tatmetal expands its renewable energy investments through a major new initiative. As part of a €60 million agreement under its subsidiary, Şule Energy, Tatmetal is establishing a wind power plant with an annual production capacity of 200 million kilowatt-hours (kWh). The project, with an installed capacity of 66 MWe, is expected to go online in 2024.
In July 2023, Tatmetal, one of Turkey’s largest industrial companies, signed a major renewable energy investment deal through its subsidiary, Şule Energy. The project, worth €60 million, involves a 60 MW wind power plant, scheduled to be completed within a year. With an annual electricity production capacity of 200 million kWh, the wind farm will allow Tatmetal to cover its energy needs, offer surplus energy to distribution companies, and reduce carbon emissions by 120,000 tons. Tatmetal, which acquired Şule Energy in 2022, plans to commission the wind farm in 2024.
Value for Industry and Environment
The signing ceremony, held at Tatmetal’s production facilities in Karadeniz Ereğli, was attended by Tatmetal Board Members and representatives from Goldwind, the Chinese company responsible for the project installation. A Tatmetal spokesperson highlighted, “The production sector is energy-intensive, and energy costs are high. Additionally, export markets prioritize environmental sensitivity, which pushes Turkish manufacturers to adopt more responsible and eco-friendly energy options. At Tatmetal, driven by our vision for the future and commitment to adding value for industrial partners and the environment, we have been investing in renewable energy sources since last year. We started with solar power, and our journey will expand further with the wind power plant we aim to commission in 2024. Through Şule Energy, our subsidiary, we are working towards meeting all our energy needs from renewable sources while contributing surplus energy to the national grid. Our goal is to continuously improve as an eco-friendly industrial company.”
The wind farm will be located on approximately 600 acres on the Isparta-Konya border and will include 11 turbines. Construction will employ nearly 100 people through Şule Energy’s subcontractors, and 12 personnel will work in its operations phase. After project completion, Şule Energy will supply all produced energy to authorized electricity distribution companies.
Expanding Solar Energy Investments
Tatmetal is also enhancing its solar energy investments. In 2022, it established solar energy systems with a capacity of 10 MW on 70,000 square meters of rooftop space at its production facilities, producing an average of 12 million kWh of electricity annually. Additionally, a new solar power project in Karabük with a capacity of 7.8 MWe is expected to generate around 13 million kWh annually, further supporting Tatmetal’s energy independence. This new solar project is scheduled to go live in the second half of 2024.
