Iran’s religious leader Khamenei warns Erdogan: Action on Syria will damage the region
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s religious leader, has reportedly warned President Tayyip Erdogan, who is on a visit to Tehran with an agenda of operations against Syria, that “Military action will damage the region and benefit terrorists.”
Erdogan who wants to organize a new operation against Syria, went to Iran with this main agenda. He was greeted by his Iranian counterpart Ibrahim Reisi.
Turkey’s President was accompanied by a large number of staff, including National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and MIT President Hakan Fidan. Erdogan, who met with Reisi, is also expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Iran: Terrorists may benefit from such an operation
Iran’s religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a meeting with Erdogan that military action against Syria would damage the stability of the region as quoted by Reuters on Iranian state television.
What was Erdogan targeting?
Turkey which has conducted four military operations in northern Syria since 2016, had announced that it would continue operations to create ‘safe zones’ along the border by advancing 30 kilometers from the border. The United States had not given the green light to a possible operation east of the Euphrates, where it controls airspace.
Erdogan had also announced that they planned to enter Tel Rifat and Minbij, where Russia and Iran have a say in this. Russia had also reinforced its forces in the region along with the Syrian army against a possible operation. For this reason, Erdogan was expected to make a request to the Tehran administration not to oppose an enetual operation in Tel Rifat – where Iran has a say – during this visit.

It is no secret that Russia has a strong objcetion to an eventual Turkish operation in the region as well. In fact, it was reported a short while ago Russia together with Syria enforced their existence in the area.
