Istanbul Cracks Down on Taxis Overcharging Tourists

Protecting Tourists in Istanbul
Istanbul, one of the world’s most visited cities, is taking serious steps to protect tourists from unfair taxi practices. The licenses of two taxis were permanently revoked after drivers were caught charging visitors exorbitant fees. Investigations revealed that one tourist was charged 36,000 Turkish lira and another was billed 400,000 lira in two separate transactions.
By addressing these violations, city authorities are sending a clear message: tourists should feel safe, respected, and confident when using Istanbul’s transportation services.
New Rules to Ensure Safer Taxi Rides
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) announced stricter regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future. Taxi drivers who receive heavy penalties will now be required to attend a five-day training program. The course includes lessons on Istanbul city knowledge, safe driving techniques, and even foreign language skills to better serve international visitors.
Only drivers who successfully complete the training and pass the final exam will be allowed back on the road. This initiative aims to raise the standards of service and rebuild trust among travelers.
A Better Experience for Visitors
Alongside revoking licenses, authorities confirmed over 1,700 penalties against taxi operators and drivers for violations such as failing to start the taximeter, smoking in the car, and driving under the influence. These strict measures are part of a wider effort to make transportation in Istanbul more transparent and tourist-friendly.
For visitors, this means greater peace of mind when exploring the city — from the historic streets of Sultanahmet to the lively districts of Beyoğlu and Kadıköy. Istanbul is working to ensure that every journey is as safe and enjoyable as the destination itself.
