Metropolitan Municipality to open earthquake parks in Istanbul on August 17

Istanbul is going to have its first earthquake parks on both sides of the city. Earthquake parks in Ataşehir and Topkapı will be opened on August 17, with the participation of IBB President Ekrem Imamoğlu. “Earthquake parks” which were among promises of IMAMOGLU during local elections campaigns, will spread throughout the city in a short time.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) will open the Ataşehir (Deniz Gezmiş) and Topkapı earthquake parks on the Asian and European sides of the city on August 17. It is reported that IBB Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu will personally attend the opening ceremony will take place at Ataşehir Deniz Gezmiş earthquake Park at 18.00.

The capacity of the park in Ataşehir will be 500-700; the capacity of the park in Topkapı will be 5 thousand people. Over time, the project will spread to other designated areas throughout the city. Earthquake parks will serve as education and culture center pre-disaster and they will serve as temporary shelter centers with their in-park furniture, tents and food distribution areas.

Location selection of earthquake parks is done according to scientific criteria. According to the criteria determined with the participation of the experts, 859 assembly areas with a total capacity of 21 million people in the size of 32 million square meters were determined in 39 districts.

A total of 17 thousand open and 2,662 closed temporary housing areas were identified. In the selection of places, the size of the open space was at least 10 thousand square meters. The areas planned to provide short-or medium-term housing for citizens after the disaster and to support rescue efforts.
