Statement from Russia regarding Turkey’s Syria operation

A statement also came from Russia after President Erdogan signaled the launch of a new military operation in Syria. Turkey’s announcement that it would launch a new operation in Syria continues to cause controversy internationally.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had made an important statement last week and signaled that a military operation could be conducted in Syria, saying “We are entering a new phase of our effort to create a 30-kilometer-deep safe zone along our southern borders.”

“WE UNDERSTAND TURKEY’S CONCERN”

The most recent statement about the possible operation came from Russia. “We hope that Ankara will refrain from making a move that would dangerously worsen the already difficult current conditions in Syria” said Maria Zaharova, a spokes person for the Russian Foreign Ministry. She went on to say, “Such a step, which will be taken without the approval of the Syrian government, directly violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and leads to a further increase in blood pressure in Syria.”

ZAHAROVA also shared following: “We understand Turkey’s concerns about its national security in the border areas” adding that the problem could only be solved by deploying the Syrian army in the region. Russia had supported the Bashar al-Assad administration in the war in Syria.
