Izmir Municipality creates alternative model to replace imports in agriculture

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality which started agricultural and rural development practices in 2007, became the first municipality to establish “Agricultural Services Office”. As the importation of agriculture keeps increasing, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has developed “Local Development Model”. The model which has been a sample for many municipalities supports farmers through cooperatives. Following the implementation of the project, the number of members of the cooperatives has increased by 161 percent, while the total number of products supported by this practice has increased by 225 percent.

The Municipality of Izmir which has provided 825 million TL in 10 years, is also commissioning new projects. The Agricultural Field of Expertise, which will open the path of scientific production to flower producers, is in the process of being established, as well. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality which started agricultural and rural development studies in 2007, was the first municipality to establish “Agricultural Services Office”. The municipality, which supports farmers through cooperatives, implements a “local development model” that increases production rather than imports. The municipality has provided TL 825 million of agricultural support in the last 10 years.
