It has been reported that flights from Tokyo Haneda Airport to Istanbul airport will be operated daily from 6 July 2020. Turkey and Japan have very friendly relations dating back to more than hundred years ago. The two countries also have improving relations in trade and culture. Sharing their plans for the future, Turkey’s Ministry of culture and Tourism had announced earlier that 500 thousand Japanese tourists would be expected annually by 2023.

Regarding the issue, Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy had already voiced that they were determined to increase flight traffic from Japan to recently opened Istanbul Airport and said “the number of flights between Japan and Istanbul 7 per week will probably be up to 54 by mid-2020”. Certainly such increase would also contribute to an increase in volume of mutual trade.

Referring to the effect of increasing the number of direct flights between the two countries on the number of tourists, the Minister said the Turkish Airlines would be given additional landing and takeoff permits to Haneda flights at Tokyo International Airport as of April 2020 thanks to the support of the Japanese government, as well.

He added, “However, THY service will not be limited to this. Currently Turkish Airlines is flying from Narita Airport which will continue and the company will also start flights from Osaka, again. Flights from Haneda will begin as of April. As a result of our negotiations with ANA Airlines, ANA will probably launch flights to the new Istanbul Airport in mid-2020. The number of flights between Japan and Istanbul, which is 7 a week, will probably increase to 28 by mid-2020. This suggests that the problem with transportation will have been solved in a serious manner.”
