Kamala Harris reaches delegate number needed for presidential nomination

After U.S. President Biden withdrew from the election race, Kamala Harris has successfully gained the necessary support from delegates for the presidential nomination.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, having secured the support of enough Democratic Party delegates to approach the presidential nomination, will campaign in Wisconsin for the first time today.

Following the announcement over the weekend by President and Democratic Party nominee Joe Biden that he is withdrawing from the race for the November 5 election, Harris became the party’s likely candidate. Within 36 hours of Biden endorsing Harris, she secured the majority support of the party delegates required to guarantee her nomination.

The 59-year-old former California Attorney General and former senator stated last night, “Tonight, I am proud to have secured the support needed to be our party’s nominee. I look forward to formally accepting the nomination soon.”

According to an unofficial delegate poll conducted by the Associated Press, Harris has received the support of over 2,500 delegates, significantly surpassing the 1,976 delegates needed to win the upcoming vote.

Harris’s visit to Wisconsin presents a new opportunity to relaunch the Democrats’ campaign and demonstrate that she is the best candidate to win against Trump.

HOPE AMONG DEMOCRATS

According to a poll conducted in the U.S., nearly half of Democrats believe that their chances of winning the presidential election on November 5 have increased with President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race.

CBS News and YouGov polling companies asked registered Democratic voters for their opinions on Biden’s withdrawal. Forty-five percent of Democrats polled think that Biden’s withdrawal increases the likelihood of defeating the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, 28% of Democrats believe that the election results will depend on who the nominee is. Eighty-three percent of Democratic Party members who participated in the poll approve of Biden’s withdrawal, while 17% think otherwise.

Seventy-nine percent of Democrats support Kamala Harris’s candidacy, while 21% believe there should be a different candidate.
