Letter from EU to Turkey about tensions with Greece

GREECE AND TURKEY CONFLICT

High Representative of the European Union Josep Borell wrote a letter to Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu addressing the recent tensions with Greece. The Greek press published details about the letter.

At a time when tensions between Turkey and Greece are substantially increasing, the High Representative of the European Union Josep Borell wrote a letter to Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Based on what Greek media published, Borrell gave a clear message to Turkey to stop actions that escalate tensions and respect international law.” Borell was also said to have told Cavusoglu that Greece’s sovereignty over the Aegean islands was indisputable.

Diplomatic sources speaking to the Greek-based Ta Nea newspaper stated that Borell’s letter also discussed the flights of Turkish jets over the Aegean islands, while Turkey was warned about increasing the harshness in its rhetoric.

GOOD FAITH DIALOGUE IS ESSENTIAL

Borell’s letter also stressed that the limitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone and the Continental Shelf should be carried out through a good-faith dialogue, fully respecting International Law and the UN Convention on the International Law of the Sea.

In his letter, Borell stressed that the only way to improve good-neighborly relations was to find peaceful solutions to disputes, including resorting to international treaties and the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
