EARTHQUAKE MAGNITUDE

Director of the Earthquake Research and Application Center (DAUM) of Dokuz September University (DEU) in Izmir Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir noted that there could be aftershocks of magnitude 5 after the Düzce earthquake and said, “The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9, but the intensity was calculated as 8.”

After the earthquake in Düzce, explanations keep coming one after another. Director of DEU DAUM Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir made a statement after the 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered in Düzce Gölyaka.

“BUILT ON A FLAT WEAK GROUND”

Prof. Dr. Sözbilir said, “Düzce was founded on a weak ground that we call alluvium on a large scale. If there had been old building stock here, there would have been serious destruction and loss of life. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9 but the intensity was calculated as 8.

On October 30, 2020, we had felt the 6.6 magnitude earthquake with a magnitude of 8. In that earthquake, about 5 thousand buildings were damaged, 4 buildings were completely destroyed and 117 of our citizens were killed. This shows that the province of Düzce is ready for an earthquake. The earthquake at 04.08 today took place at the northeastern end of the segment of the North Anatolian Fault called Karadere, which broke during the earthquake of August 17, 1999.
