Reactions are growing against the dismantling of the asbestos ship Nae Sao Paulo belonging to the Brazilian navy, in Aliaga. Öztunç, CHP Deputy Chairman Responsible for Nature Rights and Environmental Policies wrote a letter to the Brazilian Embassy in Turkey in this context.

Oztunc who wanted the ship to be stopped in the letter wrote: “We urge you to take the necessary steps and stop sending of nuclear war ship Nae São Paulo which will bear lead to legal responsibilities between two countries, to Turkey immediately and call said ship back to the borders of your country.”

Öztunç reminded in the letter that ALIAGA (where the ship is supposed to be dismantled) was a region with many health problems due to the current pollution burden. The letter also noted that the asbestos-laden ship had been used by France for nuclear tests for many years and therefore contained a significant amount of hazardous waste.
