“Mandatory” 1500 TL Spending Limit in Restaurants! “

In some restaurants in Istanbul, a spending limit policy has been implemented. According to this policy, even if you only have a tea, you are required to pay the set spending limit, which is usually 1500 TL. A significant warning regarding this issue has come from Ibrahim Güllü, Deputy Chairman of the Turkish Confederation of Consumer Associations (TÜKONFED).

The “spending limit” that is commonly seen in popular vacation areas has now started to appear in restaurants as well. Along with ongoing debates about cover charges and service fees, the “spending limit” in Turkey’s most popular tourist regions has become a hot topic of conversation.

Some Restaurants Have Already Started to Implement the Policy

In some restaurants, businesses are asking customers to pay for a fee that does not exist. Authorities have suggested “penalties” for such businesses, but this has not resolved the issue. This spending limit, typically 1500 TL, has also started being applied in some restaurants in Istanbul. Lawyers have pointed out that requiring customers to pay this amount even for just a tea is an unlawful practice, while citizens have described it as “discrimination.”

“File a Complaint with the Ministry of Commerce”

Speaking on a television channel about the issue, Ibrahim Güllü, Deputy Chairman of TÜKONFED, stated, “Consumers should file a complaint with the Advertising Board of the Ministry of Commerce and request action. Additionally, they can also file a complaint with the Turkish Human Rights and Equality Institution, arguing that this practice is discriminatory.”
