Turkey Issues Yellow Weather Alert for January 8

Turkey’s Meteorology General Directorate (MGM) has issued a yellow-coded warning for 63 provinces as unsettled weather affects much of the country. The forecast highlights widespread rainfall, snow at higher elevations, strong southerly winds, and storm conditions.

Rain and showers, locally heavy in western Marmara, the Aegean and the western Mediterranean, will dominate, with thunderstorms along coastal areas. Sleet and snowfall are expected in Eastern Anatolia, mountainous regions, and higher elevations in the north and northwest.

Winds may reach 60–90 km/h, increasing the risk of transport disruptions and damage. Frost and icing are expected overnight in central and eastern regions, while avalanche danger remains high in snow-covered mountainous areas.

Temperatures will remain below seasonal averages in Southeastern Anatolia and above normal elsewhere, with authorities urging caution against weather-related hazards.

Istanbul: Thunderstorms and Strong Southerly Winds

Istanbul is expected to experience very cloudy weather with intermittent showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. Rainfall may be locally heavy, increasing the risk of short-term flooding in low-lying and urban areas.

Winds will blow from southerly directions, becoming strong and occasionally stormy, especially along coastal and elevated areas. During the late night hours, sleet or light snowfall may occur in the higher parts of the city, while temperatures remain above seasonal averages.

Muğla: Locally Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

Muğla will see widespread showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall expected to be locally strong across the province. These conditions may lead to flash floods, water accumulation and transportation disruptions, particularly in coastal districts.

Southerly winds are forecast to strengthen at times, reaching near-storm intensity. Authorities warn residents to be cautious against possible falling objects, tree damage and coastal disturbances.

Antalya: Heavy Showers and Storm Risk in the West

Antalya will experience cloudy conditions with frequent showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall is expected to be locally heavy, especially in western districts and higher elevations.

Strong southerly winds will affect the region, occasionally reaching storm levels, which may impact maritime activities and coastal areas. In the Taurus Mountains, precipitation may fall as sleet or snow, while lower elevations will remain rainy.

Official Warnings and Precautions

Meteorological authorities urge residents in Istanbul, Muğla and Antalya to take precautions against heavy rainfall, strong winds and storm-related hazards. Drivers should be alert to reduced visibility and slippery roads, while coastal and mountainous areas face increased risk from severe weather conditions.
