Mosquito Problem Causes Discomfort in Muğla and Other Coastal Areas

The mosquito infestation, a persistent issue that Turkey has struggled to resolve, is causing significant discomfort along the southern coasts this summer.
Residents of these regions report that despite the municipalities’ efforts to combat mosquitoes through spraying, these measures are insufficient to manage the mosquito population effectively.
The primary cause of mosquito breeding and accumulation is stagnant water. Notably, pools, especially neglected and unused ones, are highlighted as major breeding grounds.
Locals express their frustration as follows:
“The municipality is fighting mosquitoes, but as long as there are unused pools with stagnant water, spraying the streets with sprinklers is useless. The municipality should intervene with these pools. We can’t go out on our balconies in the evenings. As soon as we step out, dozens attack us. We have written to the municipality, and they said they would implement sanctions if necessary. There should be penalties for pools that are not maintained.
“In some places, they provide tablets as treatment, but only for registered pools. If the pool is unregistered, the municipality won’t even know it exists, so there’s nothing they can do. There should be fines for those who do not keep their surroundings clean, and the garbage should be monitored. We should not compromise nature while maintaining cleanliness and care.”
