A new tiered pricing system for natural gas will reshape energy bills in 2026 with state subsidies varying by city climate and consumption levels

Millions of households are expected to see changes in their natural gas bills starting in 2026 As part of a new regulation government support will no longer be applied equally across the country Instead subsidies will be linked to where people live and how much gas they consume

How the Tiered Pricing System Will Work

The tiered pricing system which was first introduced for electricity bills in February 2025 will be extended to natural gas in 2026 Under the new model the Ministry will set a reference consumption level for each city based on average temperatures and heating needs

Households that remain within the determined limit will continue to benefit from state subsidies Consumers who exceed this threshold will receive reduced support which could result in significantly higher monthly bills In some cases bills may nearly double

Why Cities Will Be Treated Differently

The new system is designed to reflect regional climate differences Cities with colder and longer winters will have higher subsidy limits while warmer cities will be assigned lower thresholds due to reduced heating demand

This approach aims to ensure that public support is distributed more fairly based on actual energy needs rather than a single nationwide standard

What the Energy Ministry Says

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated that the goal of the new pricing model is to use public resources more efficiently He explained that average consumption levels would be evaluated on a city by city basis to ensure subsidies are applied accurately

According to Bayraktar the government plans to introduce tiered pricing for natural gas in line with the existing electricity tariff structure

Could Energy Prices Rise

Responding to questions about possible price increases Bayraktar said electricity and natural gas prices would be reviewed throughout the year He noted that inflation and global energy market developments would play a key role in future pricing decisions

The government aims to limit price adjustments to once a year in line with inflation whenever possible

Why Warmer Cities May Pay More

Under the draft regulation subsidy limits will be higher in colder regions and lower in warmer ones For example residents in Erzurum may receive state support for natural gas bills up to 1200 Turkish lira while the limit for Antalya could be around 800 Turkish lira

As a result households that use high amounts of natural gas in warmer cities are expected to face higher monthly energy bills
