Earthquake measuring 7.8 shakes Iran

It is reported that an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale hit Iran’s Zahedan city on Tuesday afternoon which caused the death of at least 40 people and hundreds of others were wounded. The earthquake said to be biggest of the last 50 years was felt in many Gulf countries including India, UAE and Qatar as well.

Babacan says Turkey in better shape than EU criteria

On a visit to Atlanta to attend the “Turkey Investment Week”, Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan met with Federal Reserve Bank Governor and CEO Dennis Lockhart and Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. After delivering a speech on investing in Turkey at Emory University Babacan said when Turkey started negotiations for EU membership, it was asked when Turkey would be ready. He added that Turkey is in a better shape than EU criteria in terms of economy and the question now was when the EU would be ready.

Iraq & Turkey approach positively to energy talks between 2 countries

Under the ever so fast changing circumstances in the Middle East politics, Turkey and Iraq have finally shown a positive approach to meet together for talks about energy issues in the region. Earlier, the USA revealed its concern regarding the issue when U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry paid a snap visit to Iraq on March 24th. On this visit, the secretary held extensive meetings with Iraqi officials, with particular emphasis on the increasingly deteriorated relations between Ankara and Baghdad. The relations had been deteriorated due to Turkey’s insistence on pursuing lucrative energy deals with the northern Iraqi administration, at the expense of angering the central government.

Turkey targeting closer ties between Borsa Istanbul & Nasdaq

Only a short while after the Istanbul Stock Exchange was changed to BORSA ISTANBUL (BIST), Turkey has now expressed plans to establish closer relations between BIST and NASDAQ. Making a statement about the issue, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan said this would be a win-win situation noting that the shares of 28 Turkish companies were traded on the Nasdaq, as well. The Istanbul Stock Exchange was among the most profitable bourses in the world in 2012.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov pays visit to Turkey

Turkish FM Davutoğlu and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who arrived in Turkey yesterday are expected to meet today. Lavrov arrived in Istanbul on a private plane from Moscow on Tuesday. The ministers are expected to discuss issues such as rising tension in Syria and the upcoming trip of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan to Russia as well as the prospects of holding a second Geneva meeting to deal with the ongoing crisis in Syria.

Turkish Airlines order 278 planes worth 38 billion dollars

The Chairman of Turkish Airlines has stated that the fastest growing company in the world has ordered 278 planes with market value of USD 38 billion. The company which had a fleet of 52 planes only until a while ago owns a fleet of about 400 planes, currently. Moreover, 278 planes are expected to be delivered in the close future. Turkish Airlines has surely benefited from the steps taken by the government regarding economic and political stability on the way to establishing the country among  global leaders.

Court postpones NSU trial due to ruling in favor of Turkish daily

A Munich court postponed on Monday the long-awaited trial of a suspected neo-Nazi charged over a string of immigrant murders, after being ordered by a higher court to guarantee seats to media from Turkey. The trial of Beate Zschaepe over complicity in 10 racist murders was due to start on April 17.
