Police enters Taksim Square to remove banners

Governor Mutlu announced on Twitter early on Tuesday morning that the police had entered Taksim Square because they wanted to remove the banners and photos hung over Ataturk Cultural Center

The Governor declared that they would not intervene in Gezi Park, Taksim and the protestors.

Governor Mutlu also said “Cooperate with the security forces. I kindly request you to quietly wait where you are keeping away from provocations and wrong moves. Some protestors have used materials that release fog and smoke. We should all know that their purpose is to give the impression that the police have used excessive gas”.

Right after the Governor’s message police entered Taksim Square  and removed all banners hung over AKM except for the Turkish flag and the poster of Ataturk. 

Spokesman ARINC: PM Erdogan will meet Taksim Gezi Park groups on Wednesday

Bülent ARINC Deputy PM and spokesman for the government made a statement about Taksim Gezi Park events on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference held after the Council of Ministers meeting ARINC said “If the main aim is environment sensitivity, human rights and democracy, we would like to discuss them with our interlocutors”

Deputy PM also claimed that they found out solid evidence showing the incidents had foreign connections.

Arinc declared that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan would meet representatives of the groups conveying demands to the government concerning the planned bulldoze in Taksim Gezi Park, on Wednesday.

Suspect for Reyhanlı blasts arrested in Turkey on Monday night

It is reported that Reyhanli blast offender N.E. was arrested near the Guvecci village of Yayladagi town of Turkey’s southern border province Hatay.

The suspect was caught after a at a joint operation held by police and 3rd border command.

Turkey had suffered from Twin bombings staged in Reyhanli town of Hatay on May 11 on which occasion 51 people had lost their lives. The blasts in Reyhanli town just across Syria border had been recorded as the deadliest cross-border attack since the onset of the Syrian incidents in March, 2011.

Turkey plans to build giant thermal power plant in Afyon

Energy Minister YILDIZ has declared that the exploration by the Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA) in the Dinar district of Afyon, which has been continuing for five years, has now been completed and that lignite reserves totaling around 950 million tons have been discovered in the area.

Based on the statement by YILDIZ, it is understood that Turkey plans to establish a 3,500-megawatt (MW) thermal power plant with a $5 billion investment in the region.

YILDIZ has also said “We aim to build a thermal power plant, worth $5 billion, that will have 3,500 MW of power. It means employment for 6,000 or 7,000 in the plant’s construction and the mining field”.

The Minister also reminded that Turkey’s goal was to generate one-third of its electricity via coal by 2023. He added “We aim to raise the local coal-fired power plant’s capacity to 30,000 MW in the next 10 years”.

UEFA starts disciplinary proceedings for Besiktas and Fenerbahce upon match-fixing allegations

It is reported that UEFA (The Union of European Football Associations) referred Turkish football clubs Besiktas and Fenerbahce to the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body on Monday, upon match-fixing allegations.

The statement by UEFA went “Following the investigation into alleged match-fixing activities involving Fenerbahce SK (Turkey), the UEFA Disciplinary Inspector has now submitted his findings to the Control and Disciplinary Body, in the context of disciplinary proceedings against this club and five club officials”.

It was also noted in the statement that UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body would communicate its decisions in the course of the week starting 24 June after the hearing on June 21 and 22 at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland.

President Gul approves approves alcohol consumption law

It is reported that Turkish President Abdullah Gul ahaas pproved a new law which involved regulations of alcohol consumption.  The new law approved by Turkish President restricts the consumption and advertising of alcohol.

It bans companies producing alcoholic beverages from sponsoring events and sale of alcoholic drinks in shops between 10 p.m. and 6:00 a.m..

It also introduces stricter penalties on drunk driving.
