PRICES IN MARKET CLIMB IN TURKEY

Turkey has been facing electricity outages for a while. CHP Deputy Chairman Ahmet AKIN commented that the crisis caused by outage in natural gas and electricity would also be reflected in grocery prices as a hike.

Pointing out that the power outage experienced throughout the country at the beginning of August was the first sign that there was a big shortage in supply security, he made the following statements:

“After the introduction of restrictions on the use of natural gas and electricity by large-scale industrial facilities, many factories decided to decommission production. At the beginning of August, there were controlled power outages in many provinces due to the inability to plan an increase in electricity consumption. The deficit caused by hydroelectric power plants, whose production share has fallen due to drought, has been covered by natural gas plants and this has increased the vulnerability in Turkey, especially in the flow of natural gas, on which we are completely dependent on foreign resources. As a result, the government has not taken any concrete steps against this fragility and has preferred not to care about the crisis in front of their eyes.”

“THE BILL OF THE CRISIS WILL BE REFLECTED IN THE SHELF PRICES IN GROCERY STORES”

The deputy said that natural gas and electricity outages in the industry would mean a halt in production and a disruption to the supply chain adding “A three-day power outage will mean a loss of production of 10 days in many sectors, which alone will mean a cost increase of 33 percent. In other words, the bill of this crisis will be reflected in the shelf prices in grocery stores, the cost of living will increase even more.”
