Patara, the Pearl of the Mediterranean, to Be Protected with New Action Plan
Sustainable Tourism and Conservation in Focus
Renowned for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, the Patara Special Environmental Protection Zone (SEPA), often called the “Pearl of the Mediterranean,” will be preserved under a newly developed action plan. The plan aims to limit human activities in the area and promote sustainable tourism practices.
According to information from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the action plan for Patara SEPA was prepared as part of the “Project for Increasing Ecosystem Resilience in the Mediterranean (RESCOM),” conducted in collaboration with the General Directorate for the Protection of Natural Assets and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Patara was selected as a pilot site for this initiative in Turkey.
Action Plan Targets Ecosystem Health and Community Wellbeing
The new action plan sets out five key objectives for Patara. Within this framework, an inventory of terrestrial and marine biodiversity will be compiled. Human activities will be regulated, and sustainable tourism initiatives will be developed to align with environmental preservation goals.
Pollution sources in the area will be minimized, and efforts will be made to improve the quality of water, soil, and air. These measures aim to protect both the ecosystem and the health of local communities.
Settlement and infrastructure projects will be adapted to harmonize with the region’s natural and cultural assets, ensuring long-term sustainability. The impact of invasive alien species will be mitigated to safeguard biodiversity.
Sectors such as agriculture and aquaculture will be encouraged to use natural resources sustainably. Protecting cultural heritage will also be a priority, strengthening the socio-ecological resilience of local communities and ecosystems.
Controlled Access and Infrastructure Improvements
The action plan, structured around the five key objectives, will be implemented in eight strategic steps. As part of this, master and detailed zoning plans, along with explanatory reports, will be prepared for Patara SEPA.
Biodiversity inventories for both land and sea will be regularly updated based on newly defined boundaries. In the marine area, zoning will be implemented to determine protection and usage principles based on collected data.
Sewage systems will be renewed, and new lines will be installed to serve residential, tourism, and social infrastructure zones.
Measures will be taken to reduce vehicle access around the beach, and designated caravan accommodation areas will be established. These zones will be equipped with essential services such as water, electricity, and waste management.
Nature-friendly, sustainable tourism models will also be promoted to ensure a balanced relationship between human use and ecological preservation.
