Historical Monuments of Eastern Anatolia Being Integrated into Tourism: Restoration Efforts Accelerate

Restoration Projects Expand Across the Region

The General Directorate of Foundations is continuing restoration projects in the eastern provinces of Bitlis, Van, Hakkari, Muş, Siirt, and Şırnak, aiming to preserve the region’s cultural heritage and incorporate historical monuments into tourism. Around 20 restoration efforts are currently underway. In addition, the “Dere Üstü Rehabilitation Project” in Bitlis has initiated the restoration of new foundation-owned structures.

Veysel Karani Mosque and Tomb in Siirt to Open by Year’s End

Ali Osman Ayan, Director of the Bitlis Regional Office of Foundations, stated that restoration work at the Veysel Karani Mosque and Tomb in the Baykan district of Siirt is expected to be completed by the end of the year. He noted that the mosque had already been reopened for worship about five months ago, and the tomb will be open to visitors by year’s end. Once completed, the restorations are expected to significantly contribute to the region’s tourism.

Ongoing Restoration in Bitlis and Van

Speaking on the restoration efforts in Bitlis, Ayan highlighted that projects launched in 2022 have already seen the successful completion and reopening of Hazo Han and Hacı Begiye Mosque. Structural renovations at Hüsrev Paşa Bathhouse are ongoing. After revising the static plans and securing approval from the Preservation Board, the bathhouse is expected to be fully restored by the end of 2026. Local authorities, including the governor’s office and municipality, are working in coordination with the General Directorate of Foundations to implement new functional plans for these sites.

In Van, six major restoration projects are progressing in collaboration with the Provincial Directorate of Investment Monitoring and Coordination. Some projects are nearing completion, while others have finalized preliminary site preparations.

Renewing Foundation Monuments in Muş, Hakkari, and Şırnak

In Muş, mosque restoration continues, while in Hakkari and Şırnak, community-supported mosque projects are largely complete. In Şırnak, a newly constructed mosque has opened for worship, and restoration is ongoing at a nearby tomb. Ayan noted that the tomb, originally built with reinforced concrete, was dismantled about three months ago, and reconstruction efforts have since begun.

Preserving Cultural Heritage to International Standards

The Regional Directorate is conducting restoration efforts in line with international conservation standards. Ali Osman Ayan emphasized the importance of this work, saying, “We are showing the necessary sensitivity to protect our cultural heritage and pass it on to future generations.”
