PM Erdogan says referendum can be held for Taksim Gezi Park

Following Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s meeting with a group of 11 people representing the protestors, Huseyin Celik Deputy Chairman of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party made a press briefing.

Çelik said a referendum could be held in Istanbul for a replica Ottoman era barracks to be built at Taksim Gezi Park adding  “We will respect the results of the referendum and do what the people decide in Istanbul”.

Çelik also told the journalists that the representatives, including academics, students and architects, had expresssed environmental concerns and voiced their demands to PM Erdogan.

He said the representatives had called on Erdogan to embrace the youth and understand them, said adding “We are doing politics with our people”.

On the other hand the Minister also declared that an investigation had been launched into the use of excessive force and  they would  bring those responsible to account.
