The political scene in Ankara is heating up following recent comments from imprisoned Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, raising fresh speculation over the potential candidacy of Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş in the next presidential race.
İmamoğlu’s Words Stir the Pot
Currently detained in Silivri Prison, Ekrem İmamoğlu gave a notable interview to journalist Fatih Altaylı, who is also being held in the same facility. In the interview, İmamoğlu reportedly praised Mansur Yavaş—a move that has sparked widespread discussion in political circles and within the CHP (Republican People’s Party).
According to Altaylı, İmamoğlu’s compliments toward Yavaş have been widely interpreted as an endorsement, implying that if İmamoğlu is unable to run for president, the natural successor as the CHP’s candidate would be Mansur Yavaş.
“If Not İmamoğlu, Then Definitely Yavaş”
Altaylı shared more details from the conversation, saying:
“There’s nothing new here really—both İmamoğlu and Yavaş were already presidential hopefuls within the CHP. If İmamoğlu cannot run, Mansur Yavaş will be the party’s candidate. The only question is whether Mansur Yavaş wants it. If he says ‘I’m in,’ I have no doubt that the CHP will stand behind him.”

Why Can’t Ekrem İmamoğlu Run for President Right Now?
According to the current situation, the main reason Ekrem İmamoğlu cannot run for president is due to ongoing legal proceedings and the fact that he is currently in custody at Silivri Prison. This presents a serious obstacle to his candidacy—both legally and practically.
The case against him is linked to allegations of insulting a public official and interfering with the judiciary during the election process (on top of corruption allegations). As a result of these charges, if his sentence is finalized, his political rights will be restricted. Additionally, being in detention makes it virtually impossible for him to run a political campaign or actively participate in the election process.
This situation has sparked the question within the CHP and among the public: “If not İmamoğlu, then who?” In this context, Mansur Yavaş has emerged as the most prominent alternative.
According to many political commentators and opinion leaders, President Erdoğan views İmamoğlu as his most dangerous rival, since İmamoğlu has (directly or indirectly) defeated him three times at the ballot box.
