The crisis in Turkey has been transforming public life. According to Istanbul Economic Research, 76 percent of the public cannot socialize and employers are switching to public transportation, as well. 9 out of every 10 people think twice even when meeting their basic needs.

While deepening crisis and the growing shortage of livelihoods affect millions, this situation also reshapes public life. The middle classes are observed to be rapidly melting away and the lower classes are fighting for life below the limit of hunger. An entire society is getting poorer, except for a very small minority who add wealth to their wealth. Top persons in the administration on the other hand expect ‘patience’ from the people. However, it is also reflected in public opinion surveys that the public has no strength left to withstand.

The results of a survey conducted by Istanbul Economic Research with one thousand 500 people in 12 provinces across Turkey on June 5-11, 2022 revealed the social relations that have changed and transformed with the economic crisis. According to the results of the study, 76 percent of people started to socialize less outside due to the cost of living, while 73 percent said that they had started using public transportation. On the other hand, 67 percent of the society has stated that their approach to politics and political preferences has changed. And 10 percent say that they are investing in crypto currency in search of new gains in the face of high inflation.

EVEN SOCIALIZING IS A GREAT LUXURY

The age group with the highest number of those who say they socialize less outside is the 25-34 age range with 80 percent. The proportion of those who stated that they socialized less in all age groups, (except for participants aged 65 and over), is over 70 percent. More than 80 percent of students say that they are starting to socialize less outside because of the cost of living.

The proportion of those who say that they have started using public transportation is employees with over 85 percent, while the proportion of employers is below 60 percent.

However, more than 55 percent of respondents who voted for the AKP in the 2018 general elections say that “their approach to politics and political preferences have changed as a result of the cost of living.” This figure is more than 65 percent in the MHP electorate.

90 PERCENT THINK TWICE

Along with the cost of living, there are also those who are looking for new material gains and investing in crypto money. According to the results of the research, the proportion of crypto currency investors is increasing as the age group gets younger. The age group with the highest rate is the 18-24 age December. One in five of the participants in this group states that they have invested in crypto money. This rate is decreasing to 10 percent in the 25-34 age group. From the point of view of employment groups, it seems that the most students and salaried government employees invest in crypto money. The rate of crypto currency investment in students is over 20 percent.

On the other hand, nine out of ten respondents express that they think twice before buying a product or service.

PEOPLE WHO SAY “I WILL NEVER VOTE AGAIN” ARE ON THE RISE

Crises in the country are rapidly reducing the voting potential of President Erdogan. MetroPOLL Research’s Pulse of Turkey June survey shows that the gap is opened in the face of two possible opponents of Erdogan. The research conducted by METROPOLL with a total of 2 thousand 123 people in 28 provinces across Turkey has revealed striking results.
