President Erdogan says runways may remain at Ataturk Airport

“There is a possibility that we will not demolish the runways but we will enrich the existing green areas,” President Tayyip Erdogan said about the hastily launched demolition project related to Ataturk Airport.

A secret tender was held in April for the transformation of Ataturk Airport where a hospital was built on part of its runway during the pandemic, into a national garden and construction equipment had recently entered the runway before the contract was signed.

There had been intense criticism from the opposition and many other opinion leaders and politicians on this issue, insisting that the destruction in question was a huge loss to the Turkish economy and national wealth.
