ELECTRICITY BILLS IN TURKEY

CHP Istanbul Deputy Özgür Karabat said that electricity price would be greatly increased after the increase in energy costs due to the rise of dollar TL currency rate, adding it was no longer possible to subsidize residential electricity via industrial and commercial subscribers.

There was a hike in electricity at the beginning of the year and although additional arrangements were made following reactions, the desired result was not achieved.

The electricity prices of industrial subscribers were raised by 20-26 percent in April when inflation set a record and the minimum wage melted. Experts comment that the government is trying to compensate for the increase in its costs, with hikes in the industry.

However, according to Karabat from the CHP, this method has come to an end. Karabat said: “The residences are buying electricity for 1.26 TL per kilowatt hour (kWh), including low-level tax. The high consumption cost is 1.89 TL. However, the production cost of one kWh of electricity has gone up to 2.7 TL. Industrial and commercial subscribers also pay £ 2.74 per kWh.”

THE HIKE IS INEVITABLE

Therefore, it is no longer possible to subsidize residential electricity via industrial and commercial subscribers. Since the private sector makes up about 85 percent of energy production, and at least 70 percent of them are foreign currency borrowers, a hike is inevitable!”
