Erdoğan Announces Ambitious 5G Expansion Plan

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced that Turkey will introduce 5G services across all 81 provinces initially, with full nationwide coverage targeted within two years. Speaking at the “Strong Turkey with 5G” launch event in Ankara, he emphasized that this next-generation technology will play a key role in strengthening the country’s competitiveness, productivity, and digital independence.

A Major Leap in Speed and Connectivity

According to Erdoğan, 5G will deliver up to 10 times faster data speeds compared to previous generations, reaching transfer rates of around 2 gigabytes per second. Latency is expected to drop dramatically—from 30–40 milliseconds to as low as 1 millisecond—enabling near real-time communication.

This means not just faster internet for users, but a complete transformation in how digital systems operate, with millions of devices able to connect simultaneously within a single network.

Digital Sovereignty and Cybersecurity Take Center Stage

Erdoğan highlighted that in today’s world, power is no longer defined فقط by physical borders but also by control over data and digital infrastructure. He framed 5G as a matter of national security and digital sovereignty, stressing the importance of data processing, cybersecurity, and technological independence.

Turkey, he noted, has spent years building this foundation, significantly expanding fiber infrastructure and internet access while strengthening its cybersecurity architecture.

Beyond Communication: Transforming Entire Industries

The impact of 5G is expected to go far beyond faster mobile internet. Erdoğan pointed to major changes across sectors such as healthcare, transportation, agriculture, education, and manufacturing.

With ultra-low latency and high capacity, applications like remote surgery, smart factories, autonomous transport systems, and real-time data processing will become more viable. Industries will benefit from more efficient operations, predictive maintenance, and enhanced automation.

A New Era for Smart Cities and Industry

5G will also accelerate the development of smart cities, where infrastructure systems—from traffic to energy—can be managed in real time through connected sensors.

In industrial zones, ports, and large-scale facilities, dedicated private 5G networks are expected to boost efficiency and competitiveness. Businesses, from SMEs to large corporations, will gain access to new digital business models and global opportunities.

Local Production and Strategic Independence

Another key focus is increasing the use of locally produced technology in the 5G infrastructure. Initial targets include a significant share of domestic and national communication products, with plans to raise these levels over time.

This approach aims to reduce dependency on foreign technologies while strengthening Turkey’s position in the global tech landscape.

Looking Ahead

With years of preparation already in place—from early tests to pilot deployments—Turkey is now entering the implementation phase of 5G. The government sees this transition not just as a technological upgrade, but as a strategic move shaping the country’s future in the digital age.
