Railway Transportation Share 25 Percent by 2023

RAILWAY_CONTAINERAfter being adopted as a public policy by the state, approx. 7,5 billion TL investment has been made between 2003-2010. During this time 80 projects have been signed.

Compared to 8 years ago railway freight has increased by 47 percent. Railways in Turkey predominantly serve coal, iron ore, magnesite , iron and steel products and the fuel sectors.

In 2010, 24,2 million tons of freight was realized and 462,4 million TL revenue was obtained.

For 2011, 24,2 million tons of freight and 485 million TL revenue is targeted.

In addition to the double railways and logistics village investments, freight transportation focused projects are underway. The target now is to increase railway transportation share  to 20 percent by the year 2023 (now 4,5 percent).

Between Turkey and the European countries, Sofya-Alpullu (Edirne), Cologne-Derince, Vienna-Halkalı, Lubjina-Halkalı block freight trains are running.

Between Turkey and the Middle east countries, Alsancak-Iran, Köseköy-Iran, Samsun-Iran, Mersin-Iran, Izmir-Mosul, Dortyol-Mosul, Iskenderun-Mosul, Konya-Iraq, Ankara-Iraq, Samsun-Iraq, Mersin-Syria, Haydarpasa-Syria, Eskişehir-Iraq, Bandırma-Syria block freight trains are operating.

With the Pakistan-Iran-Turkey railway line that will make an important contribution to the Southern Trans-Asian railway line that is located within the Europe and Asia transit corridor, Pakistan and India have been connected to Europe, Middle East, Central Asia and China.

Marmaray, as an important step in terms of compliance with the European Union’s fast train networks, after the implementation of projects such as Ankara-Istanbul high speed train, Kars- Tiblisi projects, will enable a seamless, fast railway link from Europe to Asia and from West to East. 42 freight trains will operate on Marmaray on a daily basis.
