Record-Breaking Fines on the Way for Disrupting Traffic Order
Sweeping Changes to the Highway Traffic Law in the New Year
In the new year, the Turkish Parliament will take up a bill proposing major amendments to the Highway Traffic Law. Under the planned regulation, all violations that endanger human life will result in both the seizure of drivers’ licenses and the impoundment of vehicles. The primary goal is to strengthen deterrence on the roads, prevent accidents, and minimize loss of life.
Harsh Penalties to Boost Traffic Safety
Behaviors that undermine traffic safety and put drivers’ lives at risk are set to face record-level fines. The draft law amending the Highway Traffic Law is scheduled to be debated in the General Assembly at the start of the year.
License Revocations for Alcohol and Red-Light Violations
Drivers who repeatedly run red lights will face license suspension, with licenses permanently revoked for those who commit six red-light violations within a year. Failing to stop at a police checkpoint and attempting to flee will result in a fine of 200,000 Turkish lira.
Drivers found with a blood alcohol level above 0.50 promille will be fined 25,000 lira. If the same driver is caught a second time within five years, the fine will rise to 50,000 lira, and a third offense will carry a 150,000 lira fine. License suspensions will escalate from six months for the first offense to two years for the second and five years for the third.
A New Approach to Speeding Violations
Driving without a valid license will be penalized with a 40,000 lira fine, while using a fake license plate will result in a 140,000 lira penalty.
Speeding fines will no longer be calculated on a percentage basis but instead by exact speed thresholds. Penalties will begin once the limit is exceeded by 5 kilometers per hour and will increase progressively with every additional 5 kilometers.
Drivers who cause traffic chaos by forming convoys or blocking roads will face administrative fines of 90,000 lira.
